If you are planning or attending a South Asian wedding, you will hear three pre-wedding events named over and over: Sangeet, Mehndi, and Haldi. They are distinct celebrations with different purposes, moods, and vendor needs — and traditions vary across Punjabi, Gujarati, Hindu, and other communities. Here is what each one is, who attends, and how they differ.
The Sangeet is a music-and-dance celebration, usually held a night or two before the wedding. Families perform choreographed dances, there is a DJ or live band, dinner, and often a lot of friendly competition between the two sides. It is the most "party" of the pre-wedding events and the one that most resembles a reception in energy — so entertainment and a good sound setup matter most here.
The Mehndi is when intricate henna is applied to the bride (and often the women in both families) by a mehndi artist. It is typically a daytime, more intimate event with lighter food, vibrant decor, and music. Because henna takes hours to apply and dry, the Mehndi is relaxed and social. The key vendors are the mehndi artist and decor; some families combine the Mehndi and Sangeet into one event.
The Haldi is a turmeric ceremony held on the morning of (or the day before) the wedding, where a turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom for blessings and a natural glow. It is informal, joyful, and usually held at home or a small venue — guests often wear yellow. It needs the least vendor support of the three, though some couples book a photographer to capture it.
