Bengali weddings have a warm, distinctive set of rituals with their own vocabulary. Here is a plain-English glossary of the key Bengali wedding terms you will hear in the GTA, and what each one means.
Gaye holud is the turmeric ceremony held before the wedding, where turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom (often at separate events hosted by each family) for blessings and a natural glow. It is colourful, joyful, and usually features yellow attire and lots of food.
Subho drishti is the "auspicious first look" — the moment the couple formally sees each other, often with the bride carried in and lifted on a low stool (piri). Mala badal is the exchange of flower garlands that immediately follows, usually amid playful lifting by family.
Saat paak is the ritual where the bride, seated on the piri, is carried in seven circles around the groom before subho drishti — a Bengali tradition marking the start of the union.
Bou bhaat is the reception hosted by the groom's family the day after the wedding, formally welcoming the bride into her new home — typically a large, celebratory meal and the second major catering event of a Bengali wedding.
The Big Bang Events helps you find GTA vendors who understand Bengali wedding traditions — gaye holud decor, cultural caterers, and bou bhaat venues.
