A Pakistani wedding is typically a multi-day series of events, each with its own name, mood, and hosts. Here is a plain-English glossary of the key Pakistani wedding terms you will hear in the GTA, and what each one means.
The nikah is the Islamic marriage contract — the religious and legal heart of a Pakistani Muslim wedding. An officiant conducts it, the couple consents, the nikahnama (contract) is signed before witnesses, and the mahr (a gift/sum to the bride) is agreed. It can be held on its own day or combined with another event.
The mehndi is the colourful, music-and-dance henna celebration held before the wedding, often with the bride's and groom's sides hosting events (sometimes separately, sometimes together). Expect vibrant decor, dholki drumming and singing, and henna applied to the bride.
In Pakistani usage the baraat often refers to the main wedding-day event hosted by the bride's family, when the groom's side arrives in procession. The rukhsati is the emotional farewell at the end, when the bride formally departs with the groom's family — typically the most tearful moment of the day.
The walima is the reception hosted by the groom's family after the marriage, a celebratory dinner that announces and blesses the union. It is usually the most formal of the events and often the largest meal — a key driver of catering budget.
The Big Bang Events helps you find GTA vendors who understand Pakistani wedding events — from mehndi decor to walima venues and halal caterers.
